Children learn to use their mother tongue through listening to language around them being used in context, and by being shown by the adults around them how to use it for themselves. Childcare workers need to know how to interact with children to support and promote children's emerging language abilities. Through activities using songs, children's picture books, and other learning materials for children in English, students practice these necessary skills for fostering young children's development no matter what their mother tongue, and at the same time improve their own English language skills. This research project involves the development of such materials, their implementation in selected required English classes for Early Childhood Education and Care Majors, and the evaluation of their effectiveness.
