This corpus-driven project in progress aims to develop a theoretically-grounded vocabulary learning app
for junior high school students in Japan. Through collaboration with industry and academia, 18
government-authorized English textbooks were digitalized and analyzed in terms of types, tokens,
collocations, difficulty levels, registers, etc., to better inform the basic design of the vocabulary app. In
addition, language use in the textbooks was compared with that in native English reference corpora to
