Salafism expansion to Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, appears to have coincided with the oil boom for the oil producing countries in the Middle East in the 1970s, especially from Saudi Arabia.  To say “expansion” indicates a neutral spread of the idea called “Salafism” yet, in reality, it is a process where “push and pull” dynamics played a role.  The push is a Saudi government policy to propagate its own version of Islam worldwide with oil money, and the pull is political and social circumstances unique to these three countries.  By examining the push and pull, this paper hopes to elucidate if there is a degree of social resilience in these countries.  In other words, this paper treats the social character of these countries, which allowed the entry of the Saudi version of Salafism (usually called “Wahhabism”), as a sort of filter that allowed such expansion to take place in different degrees in each country.
