The present study compared the beliefs and learning strategies of students at Shanghai Japanese High School regarding second and foreign languages. The results suggested that learning of a foreign language in a classroom had a stronger reinforcing effect on learners’ beliefs and their uses of learning strategies than did second language learning in everyday settings, and that beliefs formed through the experience of using a second language for everyday needs could have transfer effects on the uses of learning strategies for foreign languages in a formal setting.
