The present review study investigated trends in comparative research on speaking test modes aiming to uncover shifts in both the volume and content of scholarly papers within this field. The analysis revealed that most of the research focuses on assessment agreement, examining rating scores and speech analysis (complexity, accuracy, fluency, and linguistic functions), with fewer studies exploring the washback effects on test-takers, such as preferences, anxiety, and motivation. The discussion emphasizes the need for future research to investigate how learners' beliefs about tests and test formats are influenced by their experiences with different speaking test modes.
